anchorage alaska by anchorage daily news

The Anchorage "bowl"  is located on a flat plain surrounded by the Chugiak Mountains and the ocean of Cook Inlet. Temperatures in Anchorage are relatively warm in the winter (above zero) and there is little wind, so it is quite comfortable. The town itself is undistinguished, but the setting is stunningly beautiful and the people and pace are all about Alaska.

Most buildings are under three stories, with a few at 10 stories. The town is not crowded, and moose really do wander the streets frequently in the winter. The best hamburger in the world can be had at the Arctic Roadrunner (Dick Sanchez owner) on Old Seward Blvd. at International Airport Road. Sit by the fire under the moose rack and be with real Alaskans (who never take or tell tourist about this place).

We love being in the last frontier with moose in our yard almost daily.

The house on the "hillside" in Anchorage, Alaska with Janet and Joey out on the street in front in the middle of winter. The street has a great view of 'flattop', a mountain in the Chugach Range. Houses in Alaska have 6 inch thick walls and are much "tighter" than in the lower 48 and they stay really warm with a little fuel. During the winter the hillside requires studded tires and four wheel drive is a big help, some parts of it you can't get to without it.

Joey was our great Alaskan dog, he weighed in at 130 pounds and had a bark that would vibrate the rafters. His undercoat would come in so thick in the winter that he preferred to stay outside until it was about 10 below. In the spring the undercoat would come out in clumps and a blizzard of hair. Joey was moose wise, and never, ever would he run up and bark at a moose, only to run back to us with the moose in hot pursuit.

Joey was a a great dog !
