One thing about Alaska, you get moose in your yard, and these were in ours !

It was a warm day, and this soon to be mommy moose decided to use our yard sprinkler for a little drink and also an impromptu cooling down.

There are about 800 resident moose in Anchorage, with the number going as high as 1,500 during the winters. The moose are the largest member of the deer family and wander about year round. We very seldom see a bull with a rack ("outsiders" call them antlers).

all these pictures were taken in our back yard in Anchorage, Alaska -- moose wander all over town, even in the denser business areas

With the seasons passing, so does being a calf

-- by the second winter the  calf had grown into a young adult, some say all moose look the same, but not to us !

Moose eat trees (mountain ash, williow, alder, crab apples) and graze underwater in ponds and bogs. They will starve on hay, they are deers, not cows. They naturally float and are great swimmers. We have seen them swim fast running rivers successfully without a second thought.
