Alaskan!
|
 |
| Standing in front of the
plane prop on the Yentna River (frozen 15 feet deep) near Riversong
Lodge, Alaska after flying out from Anchorage to set up to for the
Iditarod passing that night - In Alaska he learned to survive on his own in the
"bush"; dealing with gnarly bears, firefighting burning cabins
with no help, catching and cleaning trophy fish and going to help stranded
friends. He relishes the challenge of being totally responsible for
his decisions in an environment that is unusually unforgiving of mistakes.
Thomas started his academic path at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. |

Chelatna Lake
|
| Working
summers in the wilderness at Chelatna
Lake near the base of Denali
doing everything from construction to hunting, fishing and dealing with the
bears. Thomas' cabin was
8X10 feet with no heat (nights below freezing) and no indoor anything -
but he did have an ermine living under the floor for companionship - he
read by lantern light in the evenings - travel to the lake was only
possible by float plane and a good bush pilot. The bears were real bears
and not to be taken with anything but immense
seriousness and caution. |
